What can you do to reduce your carbon footprint?

What can you do to reduce your carbon footprint? Here are some tips you can follow in your day-to-day life to lessen your personal impact on the environment.

Housing

We all want our homes to be comfy, right? Ok, yes, we agree on that.  Now, we want you to go one step further and have a comfortable AND sustainable home.

  • Change to a green energy provider

Renewable Energy companies have been driving changes in the energy market and are now providing cheap and sustainable energy. By choosing one of these providers, you are limiting your own footprint and supporting our shared future.

  • Make the switch

Energy efficient bulbs can last up to 25 times longer than traditional bulbs, they also use 80% less power to provide the same light.

  • Reduce your consumption

Which is not equal to be trembling with cold at home, but to reach a certain equilibrium.

Use natural light and unplug your appliances when they are not being used.

Transport

If you don’t want to harm the planet when you go to work, follow these simple tips:

  • Cycle

The most eco-friendly mode of transport is cycling, it creates no emission, uses no resources and keeps you fit and healthy. By cycling more, you are also taking cars off the road that would otherwise cause congestion and pollution.

  • Use public transport

Public transport is a great alternative to driving and will reduce your carbon footprint drastically. And again, less cars on the road! And the best thing: it will also give you added time to read or listen to music on your journey.

  • Drive efficiently

If you have to use your car, then use it properly. There are some bad habits people have that make the impacts of cars a lot worse:

Removing excess weight from the vehicle will help improve fuel efficiency.

Having the correct air pressure in your tires results in better petrol mileage, better handling of the car, cheaper maintenance costs and a smaller environmental impact.

Food

Follow this tips to be sustainable and healthy at the same time. These two concepts are connected by invisible bonds in the magic reality of things. Ok, maybe I exaggerated a bit.

  • Eat season food and KM0 products

Everything you buy has a footprint, so try to choose products that have been sustainably sourced, or KM0 products. Buying seasonally produced food supports your local agricultural economy and also helps the environment by cutting down on the packaging, transport and high intensity farming process needed for out of season foods.

  • Eat less meat and dairy

One of the most important changes you can make for the planet is changing your diet.

The production of meat and dairy products is one of the major causes of greenhouse gas emissions. I know its difficult, but you just need the right recipes. Eat vegetables, legumes, cooked on a nice way. Explore different culinary traditions, treat your palate well!

  • Add variety

The way a food is farmed is a hugely important part of how sustainable that type of food is. Crop monocultures will drain nutrients from the soil, giving no time to recover. By having a diverse plate, you will ensure to have a more nutritious and natural meal – one that is in harmony with the nature that surrounds you.

Smart consumer

The average consumer is consuming a lot that they don’t need. We are influenced on daily basis to consume compulsively. But, do we really need all that stuff? Most of it is going to end up in the bin anyway, right?

  • Buy an expensive thing that lasts longer

We live in a culture of disposable fashion which is taking its toll on the environment. Buy one well-made expensive item of clothing rather than constantly replacing it with cheaper alternatives. This will stop the waste of resources in manufacturing, it also cuts down the transport costs and carbon cost of the supply chain too. Less clothes being transported means less emissions and trucks on the road. Now you have an excuse to treat yourself to that nice coat.

  • Buy second hand

A shift to more sustainable shopping practices requires us to appreciate what we already have. Shopping second hand is an excellent way to act with our wallets and change the economy for the better. Charity and second-hand shops have excellent product control procedures, which means the clothes within them is of the highest quality.

  • Buy fair trade & eco-friendly products

Buying products which and brands which are mindful of the environment is a must.
