The researchers from First Street Foundation, a New York nonprofit that studies climate risk, predict that in 3 decades, more than 100 million Americans will live in an extreme heat belt where at least one day a year, the heat index will exceed 125° Fahrenheit, an extreme danger level. Effects of this extreme heat

• The recent heat wave in the Pacific Northwest sent almost 1,000 people to the hospital.

• Power grids experience blackouts.

• People experience exhaustion and dehydration as temperatures increase and can die from heatstroke.

• Bridges and roads buckle.

• Rising temperatures alone are responsible for over a 150 diseases made worse, increasing mosquito survival, biting rates and outbursts of dengue fever and malaria.

As scary as this is, there’s still hope. We still have time to avoid the worst consequences of climate change and leave this hot topic behind.
